Tutor Profile: Dave Simpson

Biography

I started playing the Drums quite late in life, around 17 years old, almost by accident really. I was the singer in a band at school and we had a very unreliable drummer who kept 'forgetting' to come to rehearsals. One day, faced with yet another drummerless rehearsal, I decided to jump behind the kit myself and I've never looked back!

After spending the next 10 years playing in many different bands in both the Glasgow and Edinburgh music scenes as well as several function bands, I decided I wanted to try and make a proper career for myself within music. To that end, I sold pretty much everything I owned and moved to London to study at Drumtech Drum & Percussion School.

I had an amazing year at Drumtech, met some fantastic people and learned from some of the best player/teachers in the country including Tom Meadows (Duffy, Girls Aloud), Justin Scott (Amit Chaterjee, Mike Mondesir, Rhythm contributor), Erik Stams (Stu Hamm, Julian Crampton, Rhythm contributor) and Bosco De Oliveira (Terry Callier, Hamish Stewart, Sade) to name but a few.

I graduated from Drumtech's 1 year Diploma course in 2004 with a merit pass and was also awarded the Best Live Performer Prize for my year.

Since graduating, I have been involved with many different original artists and bands in London, playing live, writing and recording with them. Currently I play for two up and coming artists based in South London - Weisan (www.myspace.com/weisan) and Ben Williams (www.benwilliamsband.com) - as well as successful function band, End of The Century (www.eotc.co.uk), which I co-founded 4 years ago.

Nearly everyone who wants to learn drums also wants to get involved in playing music with other people and this is one of the main reasons I chose to use the Drumsense program. To begin with, it centres your learning around grooves and fills so that, in just a few months, you'll be confident enough to play in a band. After that, it's all about building on that solid, musical foundation to develop a good sound, good feel and a wide vocabulary.

I teach students from beginner to intermediate level and from aged 7 onwards. Lessons are based at my home but am also willing to travel to the student's home. I am familiar with the Rockschool program and am happy to coach students through the different grades. I also have an enhanced CRB check.
